David Armah Ashitei

David Armah Ashitei is a Ghanaian conceptual photographer driven by a restless need to materialize his intrusive thoughts, even at the risk of losing his gear. His images bring elusive narratives into view, conjuring spaces that feel strangely familiar, as if recalled from somewhere just out of reach.

Fine Soil & Caramel

David Armah Ashitei's Fine Soil & Caramel is all glamour shot — arms up, chin up — except everything the glamour shot usually edits out has been left in. Fuzzy armpits, a hot pink blush swept high into the temples, and a platinum-blond pixie cut freed from the usual shorthand for desire. Nothing here has been smoothed over for the camera. The photographs don't scold you for looking; they just refuse the airbrushed version.

Ashitei works less from a thesis than from instinct, chasing the image first and letting the meaning catch up later. Here, caramel is sweet enough, but it still sticks to the roof of your mouth.
